    The IBM

    Thinkpad 701

This is a non official fanpage for the IBM Thinkpad 701C and 701CS aka Butterfly, you can find some background informations, interesting facts and detailed installation instructions for your favourite Operatingsystem and some tools in the download section of this page.

An IBM researcher, while putting together a puzzle with his daughter, had been struck by an extraordinary inspiration: separate the keyboard in two joint blocks that would expand and withdraw when you open and close the display. The ThinkPad 701 keyboard represented a major shift in technology by enabling a standard-sized keyboard to be incorporated into a small notebook for more comfortable typing...

The Thinkpad 701 is more than 246x201x43 mm and 2,2 kg (incl. Baterypack), with outstanding specs for these days (1995). Once you see the Trackwrite Keyboard unfolding, you simply have to love this machine.

    The history section:

the Thinkpad 701 was "born" March 27. 1995, and built until Jun 28. 1996

The IF product design award 1996

    The artwork (MoMa )
The ThinkPad 701 series was chosen to the permanent collection of the MoMa (Museum of Modern Art / New York), a shortage of the compromise is one of the reason why this product has fascinated the MoMa.

    The movie star

The (not fancy at all) official IBM announcement

The Mosquito - the homage to the 701c
The Mosquito is a shrinked (65%) replica of the Thinkpad 701 and was built as a giveaway in 2002 to celebrate the 10th aniversary of the Thinkpad product line.
